The M1 has been closed in South Yorkshire after a vehicle hit a pedestrian, according to police.

The southbound carriageway between J36 at Tankersley and J35A at Stocksbridge was shut following the crash at about 05:30 GMT.

Traffic stuck between the junctions had all been turned around by about 09:00 GMT, said Highways England.

The road is expected to remain closed for some time, said South Yorkshire Police.

No details of injuries have yet been released.

Traffic is being diverted off the motorway via the A61 and A616. Motorists are advised to plan their route and avoid the area if possible.

Traffic was queuing about 5 miles (8km) back to J38 Haigh, said Highways England.
